Chapter Two is up, and it is a cooker.  My boy Nav is a badass.

Were any other species immune to the mutaplague?

If the Owl people are bi-peds can they also fly?

Do the muties wear clothes too or does Nav Licim show off all his wilted green appendages?

I guess I like more detail  like Nav's ribbing that tightens for natural defense!  Wow bullet resistant celery - that's gotta get kids to want to eat their veggies!

Thanks for getting Chapter 2 up for us!

BAR0426--
Nav's green willy?  Why didn't Daniel D. think of that?!  (Equally puzzling question: why did you?)

No, seriously, thanks for those questions.  Very helpful.  I'll make sure they are all answered, one way or another as I proceed.

I have a question for you, and everybody else: in the history of pulp fiction has there ever been a "Fightin' Veggie"? (Of course there were "Killer Tomatoes," but I think a tomato is a fruit, not a veg--it contains seeds.)

Oh, well, time to pull on the Tyvek suit and breathing filter and get back to scraping mold ...

That's easy:

DD = Man like upthrusties
BAR = Woman like upthrustie

If the Nija Princess can sway and bounce so can Nav!

Good answer.

The existence of Nav's rumored (but as yet undescribed) josticulating upthrusty is still an open question. It entirely depends on how the Celery people reproduce--something that can only be revealed by more scraping of the manuscript.

From the description in Chapter 2, SR's Mushroom people appear to lack "upthrusties" of either variety (singular or plural), and propagate like fungi.  It is conceivable that Nav and his Celery people are self-pollinators (which brings to mind a "love scene" that I pray DD has spared us).

I dunno I kinda liked the whole mushroom gill/neck nuzzling idea and since they are already slimy...  I say go for the "love scene".

I did a bit of surfing and mostly came up with cute adaptations of vegetables teaching children except for this one which is obviously a take-off on the Killer Tomatoes but also for kids.  http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/l...tatoes.htm

Al, loved chapter two and the visuals in my mind made me hanker for a cover depiction! Any plans to commission a cover?

Funny 1950's pulp-ish book cover.  I'm thinking Nav is way-scarier than any raw spud, with or without his pants.

Ron and I tried to awhile ago and it ended in tears.  I think we're going to wait until more of the book is "freshened" before we resume the hunt. We have also been discussing the possibility of getting a graphic artist to do a set of "character studies" as well--individual images which could be emblazoned on tee shirts, coffee mugs, mouse pads, and of course tattooed.

On a completely unrelated note, I could never figure out why you picked "Upthrustie" (singular) as your SR forum handle (as opposed to "Upthrusties," plural) until I read BAR0426's insightful analysis of the issue in this thread.  Now it all makes total sense ...

I was thinking along those lines it would be great to have a guide of the main characters with pictures and detailed bios! SR should be adapted to a graphic novel at some point!

You just didn't realize how twisted your readers really are...

And yes, Nav is a very scary stalk - what kind of voice would you give him?

... but I had high hopes.

As to Nav's voice, that's another interesting missing element in DD's work so far.  (BAR0426, you have a keen eye!)

In Ch. 2 he seems to have trouble getting his words out, perhaps because his vocal cords are made of the same quasi-Kevlar fibers as his ribs. Which also could mean he might have difficulty modulating the volume of his voice--inotherwords, a loud talker.  Or the force required causes him to puff and grunt a bit--a gaspy, grunty, loud talker.  Because of the effort required to produce it, the tone of his speech would be uber-earnest, no matter the subject.

Suddenly I am picturing Will Farrell's old SNL bit as the guy who is unable to modulate the volume of his voice, so he shouts all the time. "I HAVE A DISEASE, COLIN! I SUFFER FROM VOICE IMMODULATION!!"

Yes trouble getting the words out which would just make him agrier the longer the conversation. Maybe deep gutteral yet raspy with spray of (that brown) spit spoken with demonic confidence.

Making a note to self:  Spray the brown.  Oh yes, indeed.

Great.  He's gonna turn out to be a loud talker, a spitter, and probably a close talker to boot.

It's a negative calorie food. It actually takes more energy to digest than it provides in nutrition. How evil is that?
